The Inland Fisheries Project is being expanded to meet the nutritional needs of the population in the areas where it is being implemented. Currently, the project covers 72 reservoirs, with inland fish already introduced into 20 reservoirs. The process of harvesting the fish catch has now begun.
These reservoirs are located in the Vavuniya, Puttalam, Kurunegala, and Anuradhapura districts. The project is being carried out with the assistance of the National Aquaculture Development Authority, and Rs. 5 million has been spent on its implementation so far.
In the Vavuniya District, a total fish harvest of 116 kg of freshwater prawns has been obtained from the Periyakomarasankulam and Kalkadikulam reservoirs, generating an income of Rs. 176,300.
